just went for abt 3hrs of EFR (emergency first response), pre-req for rescue diver.
learnt basic CPR and rescue breathing, as well as bandaging, splinting, bleeding/shock/spinal injury management etc.
some parts were really ridiculous:
when u see a victim of some serious accident/heart attack/anyth tt requires medical attn, u're s'posed to go up to tt person (who's more likely than not prone and unconscious), and say: "Hi, my name is ____. I'm an emergency responder. May i help u?" seriously. wat d'u expect the person to reply? "You? no way! I'll wait for the next person who comes by, thank u v much."
and if u dun get a response to the above, u're s'posed to tap the victim on the shoulder and ask repeatedly, "are u okay? are u okay?"
only after tt r u allowed to begin rescue breathing, then CPR.

we got to practice on a dummy called 'Little Anne' who's little not cos she's child-sized (the baby dummy is called baby anne) but cos she's sadly lacking arms, a proper head, hair, and anyth beyond the torso. i seriously doubt little anne had anyth 'okay' abt her. she had this horrible grimace on her face. to simulate a victim in pain, i guess. practiced rescue breathing with and without barriers. the barrier is actually a mask with a mouthpiece thru which u breathe, instead of doing mouth-to-mouth, which is much less 'clean'.
before the actual practical session we had to watch a long video where all the 'actors' had handy gloves and barriers (to protect the rescuer from infection during rescue breathing) in their pockets, all ready for any emergency. how unbelievable.
the bandaging part was quite fun. arterial blood is bright red and spurts out with the same rhythm as ur heartbeat. cool
with infants (baby Anne) u do CPR using not both hands but only 2 fingers, if not u'll end up squashing the victim.

wednesday: start of rescue diver theory session, followed by pool session.
