ponned chem s today. figured since a) i dint bring the bk, b) dint read the qns, c) wld be blindly copying bits n pieces of the ans (=useless), i might as well use the time for other stuff.
like catch up with the loads of bio tuts : kidney + nervous control (ok-alright); chem tut; start studying for CTs.
just when i thot i'd managed to catch up, another pile of hmwk is dumped on us. by the time i actually start studying for CTs it'll be way too late.
so far math looks like the most manageable subj - not like bio (entire syllabus!) and chem (organic chem!) and lit (conrad which i still haven't read!!).
tmr will be another full day cos of windsurfing n dance after tt.
fri too.
leaving not much.
tmr's march alr...

went to P Hantu to dive. viz was incredible.
incredibly bad, tt is.
practically non-existent. cld barely see my hand in front of my face. i onli realized i was at the bottom when i saw it loom up right in front of my face. when surfacing, cldn't see where the surface was cos everything was all the same, greenish and murky. a sort of blind feeling. but gd training.
lost my buddy on the 1st dive cos i cld hardly see anyth, so i swam ard on my own searching, along the bottom cos otherwise i'd have no mark for reference, then surfaced to find the guy alr there.
current q strong, kept drifting further and further away. on the last dive, the whole bunch of us surfaced to find ourselves near the jetty (n therefore extremely far fm the boat) and drifting even further. the boat cldn't come fetch us cos its anchor was stuck. had to drift some more for ages, occasionally finning so we wldn't get carried out to sea/ towards shore (the current kept changing). my skin was practically preserved by the long immersion in salt water. i can still feel the waves rocking me.
practiced rescue breaths, rescuing a 'hurt, bleeding, distressed' underwater victim, also surface panicked diver.
on the ride back to the marina i got soaked frm head to toe cos the speedboat was making splashes. took the bus home with my wet swimsuit underneath my clothes, salt crystallizing on my skin.

loads of hmwk undone. i'm bushed. guess i'll just leave them alone for now.

failing CTs is a sure thing.

bio tut was damn slack today. relief tchr s'posed to come in, and she did come in, but only for several mins, saying there was a lack of available tchrs and tt she was v sorry and everyth. no need to apologize - i'm sure no one in their rite minds wld've wanted her to stay and to listen to her ramble on and on abt kidneys n osmoreg etc.
speaking of the kidney - farah asked LC if she'd done her kidney (meaning the tut), and LC, being her usual self, acted affronted n went to interpret it in a not-so-innocent way. go figure. it was amusing
was dreading pe cos fri is always conditioning but turned out to be not so bad - not as fun as games (ie floorball/frisbee) but it was in the hall, = no running round the track. can't stand the track. instead we had to go round stations - hurdles, some weird ladder-ish thing (tt dint seem to help any), rope-skipping, pushups, shuttle run stuff and a pass-the-medicine-ball thing tt's s'posed to train the muscles at our waist or sth.
while doing the shuffle thing - to help in shuttle run - clare made yet another lame joke. she called the exercise 'pod shuffling', and said, "look, i pod shuffle!" ha.ha.ha
right now i ought to be doing my conrad essay which i hope to hand in by monday
(only 3 days late!)
so far, i've managed to complete.... (drumroll)... a 100-word intro!! which, in my opinion, sux to hell, but desperation calls for desperate measures!
gtg start on sentence 1 of the main essay, whatever tt might be.
wish me luck

went for the rescue diver thing ytd (tt's why i was lugging the huge bag ard, in case anyone's wondering). from 2-4, i watched the video, then did the exam. the exam was surprisingly easy, considering tt i dint study for it. i did the knowledge reviews but rushed thru them so quick i had no time to process what i was copying. anyhow, after the exam, i had abt 3 hrs of free time before the pool session. so i styed at the dive shop and tried to do some math and then had nth else to do cos i'd not packed anyth else tt morning into the enormous bag i had to bring to sch.
at ard 6, went to a nearby hawker centre for dinner. then went to outram secondary, where we were gonna do the pool dives. as we were still early, i wandered ard the pool. then changed and got into my gear. other divers frm other dive schs turned up and soon the pool was pretty crowded with divers. went thru the rescue procedures ("diver! inflate BCD! drop your weights!") for surface and underwater victims. by the time we ended it was v late and i'd been in the water nearly 2 hrs. luckily the wetsuit kept me relatively warmer.
after washing up, i found out the intructor's fren was heading for holland v, so i hitched a ride in his lorry. first time riding a lorry! wld have liked to sit at the back, but it was extremely dirty and littered with wat looked like construction debris. annoying thing was, everytime the lorry exceeded the speed limit there'd be a shrill beeping sound. since we'd have been going at a snail's crawl in order to avoid the noise, there was no choice but to endure the beeping. at least it meant i dint have to take 1 hr on 195 to get home, lugging the enormous bag on and off the bus.
this sunday: going to p. hantu for open water dives.

right now: extremely tired. been sleepy since ytd nite.
conrad essay
kidney tut
arenes

i'll just have to hand up the essay on monday or sth.

just went for abt 3hrs of EFR (emergency first response), pre-req for rescue diver.
learnt basic CPR and rescue breathing, as well as bandaging, splinting, bleeding/shock/spinal injury management etc.
some parts were really ridiculous:
when u see a victim of some serious accident/heart attack/anyth tt requires medical attn, u're s'posed to go up to tt person (who's more likely than not prone and unconscious), and say: "Hi, my name is ____. I'm an emergency responder. May i help u?" seriously. wat d'u expect the person to reply? "You? no way! I'll wait for the next person who comes by, thank u v much."
and if u dun get a response to the above, u're s'posed to tap the victim on the shoulder and ask repeatedly, "are u okay? are u okay?"
only after tt r u allowed to begin rescue breathing, then CPR.

we got to practice on a dummy called 'Little Anne' who's little not cos she's child-sized (the baby dummy is called baby anne) but cos she's sadly lacking arms, a proper head, hair, and anyth beyond the torso. i seriously doubt little anne had anyth 'okay' abt her. she had this horrible grimace on her face. to simulate a victim in pain, i guess. practiced rescue breathing with and without barriers. the barrier is actually a mask with a mouthpiece thru which u breathe, instead of doing mouth-to-mouth, which is much less 'clean'.
before the actual practical session we had to watch a long video where all the 'actors' had handy gloves and barriers (to protect the rescuer from infection during rescue breathing) in their pockets, all ready for any emergency. how unbelievable.
the bandaging part was quite fun. arterial blood is bright red and spurts out with the same rhythm as ur heartbeat. cool
with infants (baby Anne) u do CPR using not both hands but only 2 fingers, if not u'll end up squashing the victim.

wednesday: start of rescue diver theory session, followed by pool session.

ytd's pe was quite a welcome change. no conditioning! instead we played soccer, frisbee and capt's ball (using a rugby ball). unfortunately we lost every single game but it was still way funner than crunches and pushups.
then slacked ard for an hr i the canteen watching clare n lester play connect 4, which was amusing. then went for lit where i was further amused by the sight of ppl outside throwing javelins. i was imagining them aiming way off mark and throwing the spear towards us, thru the window and directly at whoever was the mostt exposed.
bio s was nth exciting. as usual.
wanted to stay to watch some more of talent time but had to rush off so onli got to watch the 1st one. canteen extremely crowded, ppl standing on tables and benches.
wonder how the movie under the stars went. where'd they put the screen? and why 50 1st dates, which isn't even remotely interesting?

l8r: going to pay for the EFR and rescue diver course, and get the manual to study and to plan theory lessons. i predict next wk is gonna be extremely packed, with the conrad essay+dance+theory sessions+other misc schwk. oh well. at least I'll be able to get my rescue diver cert. next step towards divemaster! all i need now is to go diving more often, log more dives, and turn 18. easier said than done.

lit trip: still undecided. $$$$$...!!!

i wanna watch brokeback mt but i definitely will not pass for 21.

from Travels by Michael Crichton:
"Singapore [is] a city that has systematically destroyed every vestige of its own exoticism... Whatever its modern virtues, and they are many, Singapore has chosen to destroy its unique face, and replace it with skyscrapers and giant shopping malls so it looks like everywhere else."

stuff from his many diving trips:
he went diving in Tahiti and got to swim right into a whole school of sharks which were 9ft long, none of that small 1m long things i saw in Tioman.
once he went down to 210 ft (abt 70m) and used up his air so quick (cos he was s'posed to stay at the bottom only abt 4mins but due to the depth and nitrogen narcosis he lost track of time) tt he was left with only 600 pounds of air for the ascent + 2 decompression stops!
another time his camera strap caught the reg. and pulled it out of his mouth and he cldn't retrieve it even tho he tried reaching to his right like we're taught to do and also tried reaching for it behind him near the tank but still cldn't find it. meanwhile he was slowly blowing air out trying to conserve his breath but was panicking and kept signalling to his sister who was diving with him. his sis at 1st dint get wat he was trying to say but eventually realized, and then she took such a long time searching for the wayward reg. that he felt as if he were abt to die.

random.

just finished the pc essay. shld be starting on gp essay outlines but i doubt i'll actually be doing them. there is nth abt politics that interests me, so how can i be expected to write an essay on it? politics has gotta be one of the least interesting topics ever. if my dad read this he wldn't be happy, seeing as how he teaches political science and all. then again, if he were ard more often mebbe he cld influence me with his views and i wldn't have such a strong aversion to politics.

i've always had the idea tt tiramisu was japanese. no reason, but it just seemed jap-like. the name, i mean.
but last wkend my sis and mom went to learn how to make tiramisu and it turns out the name is italian for 'pick me up'.
anyway they came home after the 'lesson' and attempted to make tiramisu. i nvr knew it was made using several layers of sponge fingers covered with thick cream cheese and egg, drowned in espresso and sprinkled with cocoa powder. i knew the cocoa powder part cos u always see the powder on tiramisu in the shops, but i nvr knew they involved using RAW eggs. the entire thing does not require any cooking or baking, unless u count the store-bought sponge fingers which obviously have to be baked before they're exported.
i've nvr actually eaten tiramisu b4, and after seeing how it was made i dint feel like eating any at all.

was reading 84 Charing Cross Rd and The Duchess of Bloomsbury St. the author's excitement at going to london was v amusing. i hope i'm not gonna have to suffer a 'lifetime of waiting' like she did before getting to go to the uk, which rite now seems as near as outer space.

shld refrain frm going to the library too often. went there on sat nite and borrowed several bks and as a result i haven't been doing stuff i'm s'posed to do, spending loads of time reading instead. oso found several diving mags but only flipped briefly thru one of em - Scuba Diver. there was this whole section on Manado.
which also seems as near as the UK, at least.

damn damn damn damn

the base of my spine is bruised cos of ytd's crunches on the hard hall floor.
bio s ytd was actually quite a waste of time. spent most of it watching ppt presentations tt we're gonna be able to download for ourselves anyway.

ytd morning on the bus to sch, a grand total of 2 things happened tt irritated me:
1. horrible TV mobile ads
the extremely tasteless series of citigems advertisements. approx 4 consecutively shown - 1st the ad with JP looking upset abt not having earrings. EARRINGS fergodssake! get a pair of ur own if u've gotta be so darned particular!
then followed by the ad with an idiotic woman in a citigem shop, looking at some products with the salesperson and - surprise, surprise - purchasing sth, then walking happily out the shop swinging a citigems paper bag.
the one following tt was another ad starring JP and FX, this time a longer one where one of em's getting married and abt to drive off when BOTH of them realize they've forgotten to give each other their gifts. call them best frens? they cant even rmb to give each other their wedding/farewell gifts! and how horrible issit to realize tt the present u were given is exactly the same as the one u gave away!? the song was also getting on my nerves.
the 4th one was tt brainless woman in the CG shop again, this time wearing some necklace/sth and smiling brainlessly at herself in the mirror.
... after merely 5 minutes of ChannelNewsAsia (which was, believe me, WAY more interesting than the stupid ads) there was another commercial break. and guess what - the very same 4 ads! consecutively! u can imagine my horror and disgust. i dint watch them but had to listen to the same boring song all over again.

2. there was this woman with long hair, who was sitting in front of me (hence i dint have any choice: it was either to watch her or watch TV mobile). halfway to sch, she took out a comb and started combing her hair. nth irritating abt tt yet. then she began ATTACKING her hair, brushing at it furiously and frantically, as if her life depended upon the degree of neatness of her hair (which was already incredibly tangle-free). she kept combing the left side of her hair, then the right, then the left again, and so on. the rate she was going, it was a matter of time before all she pulled all her hair out, root and all.
and then, 5 minutes of frantic combing later (and there was not an iota of difference made, except maybe the loss of a few hairs from the pulling)... she put her comb back in her handbag, then extracted a bottle of leave on hair conditioner. she sprayed some of it on her hands, and began to rub it into her hair, with the same unbounded energy. she continued this for another 5 minutes or so, and then resumed watching the news (and ads). what the hell is wrong with doing all this at HOME? i half expected her to start taking out scissors to trim her hair, or something.
unfortunately, it was not the end. another 5 mins l8r, her comb was out once more, and she was attacking her hair with it again. i have nvr been so glad to alight the bus outside sch - at least i dint have to watch her conditioning her hair again.

there's chem spa to study for. last one!
going to walk over to Holland v and return State of Fear l8r. mebbe gonna borrow another bk with the $10 i'm gonna get refunded to me. i noe it's my money by right and wont be actually earning any, but it's nice to have ppl return money to u, dont u think? esp when the $ is sth u've alr forgotten abt.

we each bought a ticket for this ride
